Unit 4: Caring

Summary: Let’s Help Each Other

Key points

  • We help each other at home: we wash the dishes, tidy our rooms, sweep the floor and water the plants.
  • Helping and sharing make the family happy; small things count.
  • Possessive adjectives tell us who something belongs to.
  • A possessive adjective always comes before a noun: my bag, our house.
  • “ai” and “ay” make the same sound /eɪ/: rain, day.

Rules to remember

Possessive adjectives
I ➡️ my, you ➡️ your, he ➡️ his, she ➡️ her, it ➡️ its, we ➡️ our, they ➡️ their.
His, her or its?
Look at the owner: a boy ➡️ his, a girl ➡️ her, an animal or a thing ➡️ its (no apostrophe).

How to do it

  1. Find the owner (who?).
  2. Change the owner into a subject pronoun (Rim ➡️ she).
  3. Choose the possessive adjective (she ➡️ her).
  4. Put it before the noun.

Example

Rim takes care of her cat and her brothers tidy their room.

Common mistakes

  • *Sami washes her hands.* ➡️ Sami washes his hands.
  • *The cat eats it’s food.* ➡️ The cat eats its food.
  • *They tidy there room.* ➡️ They tidy their room.
